Wireless data collection for heavy-duty scales
Teknoscale Oy in Finland manufactures and markets portable, electronic scales for heavy vehicle weighing. The Teknoscale scales are used by the traffic security authorities in the Nordic countries, Germany and Belgium, for the control of truck weights.
The heavy-duty scales are equipped with SATELLINE-1870 radio modems. The weighing system is controlled by a central computer. The SATELLINE radio modem connected to it polls the scales for the measurement readings.
As the vehicle or vehicle combination is driven on the set of scales, one for each loaded wheel, the dedicated Teknoscale software activates all the scales and provides each of them with a check code. After completion of the measurement the registered readings together with the check code and scale number are transmitted to the control computer through the SATELLINE.
The computer processes the weighing data, and calculates axle loads, tandem- or multiple-axle loads, as well as gross vehicle or vehicle combination weight.
This data together with the vehicle identification is included in the report given to the customer. Wireless data transfer by means of SATELLINE radio modems facilitates efficient utilisation of the portability of the Teknoscale scales, as the number and location of the scales can be easily changed to match the type of vehicle to be weighed.
Teknoscale Oy, founded in 1994, is a private company focusing on manufacturing and marketing of axle load scales, including both wired multiple-purpose models and portable units. Minor product lines are animal and crane scales. The wireless Teknoscale axle load scale was introduced in 1998, and is ever since increasingly used by the traffic control authorities in Finland and elsewhere.
