Wireless link for warning lights

The SATELLINE radio modem and I-LINK 100 I/O converter provide a working solution to a wide range of remote control problems related to e.g. switching on and off pumps, valves or warning lights. In Sweden, this technique is used to enhance flight safety.

The airport of Härnösand-Sundsvall in central Sweden is surrounded by hills high enough to pose a threat to safe landing or take-off of airplanes. Problems arise particularly at dark and under adverse weather conditions. In order to reduce the number of close-by situations and to minimise the risk of accidents, the airport management decided to set up warning lights on top of the surrounding hills.

The hills are located at a distance of 4 to 5 kilometres from the airport. Cable connection to the site was not feasible, because of the cost and vulnerability. The lights erected on two hills are therefore powered by solar panels. The lights are controlled from the Ground Control, and used at dark as well as during fog, rain or snow. The commands to switch the lights on or off are transmitted through the SATELLINE-3ASd and actuated through the I-LINK 100 converter.

Under adverse weather conditions, the Ground Control contacts the approaching airplane with the information that the warning lights on top of the hills have been switched on, and that the distance from there to the airport is 4 to 5 kilometres. The guide lights make it easier for the pilot to bring the airplane down safely.
