Remote control of the trams
The tram as public transport system has a long tradition in Bilbao, and from 1876 to 1964 there were a variety of tram networks traversing the city streets and, of course, varied technologies for running them. The tram has recently been reintroduced to Bilbao and traverses one of the city’s landmark areas, using the latest railway and communications technology. One of the most important aspects of the development is the remote tracking and control of all the operating parameters of the trams.
Each of the trams is equipped with a set of PLCs controlling the traction, braking, safety, temperature and information announcement sub-systems. These PLCs, installed in each tram, are in turn monitored and controlled remotely from a Control Centre.
SATELLINE-3AS Epic, reliable choise
After having tried and tested various options, the decision was taken to choose SATELLINE-3AS Epic radio modems, in view of their reliability and diversity reception, especially important for a mobile application in an urban environment.
A study of the communication ranges had to be carried out for the project in order to ensure that there would be 100% coverage across the entire urban network, which runs through the city over a distance of 5 km, taking into account that there are plans for future expansion.
